Flooring for Portland’s Historic Craftsman and Bungalow Homes

Portland is known for one of the oldest housing stocks on the West Coast: by some estimates more than a quarter of the city’s homes were built before 1940. After the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition, an explosive building boom filled neighborhoods like Irvington, Ladd’s Addition, and Sunnyside with Craftsman bungalows and Old Portland Foursquares — many of which still have their original wood floors beneath later carpet and finishes.

For Portland homeowners, that history makes hardwood refinishing one of the most rewarding projects we do. Sanding back and resealing original old-growth fir or oak preserves a home’s character at a fraction of replacement cost. When floors are too far gone — or in basements and additions where Portland’s roughly 37 inches of annual rain raises moisture concerns — we recommend engineered hardwood or waterproof luxury vinyl plank that mimics period-appropriate looks. Our Vancouver showroom is a short drive across the river, and we bring samples directly to your Portland home for a free, no-pressure estimate.
